Apollo was the god of light, of harmony, of order and of reason. He
was also the god of music and song. He had the gifts of archery and
divination. According to the homeric hymn to Apollo, he descended from
Mount Olympus and settled his sanctuary below the deep snows of Parnassus
in Delphi. And Delphi became the spiritual and religious center of the
ancient Greek world. The sanctuary of Apollo in Delphi was known and
respected by Homer.
Pausanias visited the great sanctuary and he described the myths regarding
the cult of Apollo, the temples, the statues, the Pythian Games, the
sanctuary of Athena Pronaia and even more. People from all corners of
the Greek world went to the oracle of Apollo to consult the god, who
spoke through the mouth of Pythia, his priestess.
Wealth was accumulated and the fame of the oracle spread in the east
and west. Every four years the Pythian Games were held there in honour
of Apollo and they included musical competitions as well as gymnastic
and equestrian contests.
Nowadays you can walk along the sacred way to the temple of Apollo,
to the theatre and the stadium higher up and admire the unique beauty
of this place, appreciate the quality of the light and think of the
belief of ancient greeks that with the protection of Apollo the longed-for
harmony between man and his environment could be achieved.

Visit the sanctuary of Athena in the south-east of the sanctuary
of Apollo situated on a narrow terrace looking down the valley of
Pleistos river. The most important buildings in it are the godesses’s
temple and the famous Tholos, a beautiful circular building in doric
style.
Then walk to the museum of Delphi to see statues, reliefs and other
objects that were found during the excavations of the site. And most
of all admire one of the most beautiful bronze statues, that antiquity
has given us, the Charioteer.
Enjoy the wonderful landscape of the mountains, the valley and the
sea in the distance, the tranquility of the place early in the evening
when most of the day visitors have gone away, and think of the people
of ancient times who went there to find out what their fate was.
