Pausanias came to Greece by boat from Asia Minor, so the first place
he mentions is Sounion. But you can start your exploration of the sites
described by Pausanias from the center of the ancient city, from the
Acropolis, the citadel and the sanctuary crowned with some of the noblest
and most magnificent works of human genius. The Propylaia, the Parthenon,
the Erechteion and the panoramic view of the hills of Athens will travel
you back to the time of Pausanias’ visit in the 2nd century AD
and even further back to the golden era of Athens in the 5th century
BC when Pericles, Pheidias, Sophocles, Euripides, Socrates lived and
created.
After the visit of the Acropolis walk down to the ancient agora and
imagine the everyday life of the ancient Athenians. Go to Kearameikos
to see the remains of two gates of Athens, the Dipylon and the Sacred
Gate. Walk along the street of the tombs in Kerameikos, the most prestigious
cemetery of ancient Athens.
Take the time to go to Piraeus, the port of ancient Athens and see one
of the three harbours of Piraeus which was for the use of the navy and
could provide shelter to eighty-two warships in boathouses and nowadays
is called Microlimano and is lined with fish-restaurants and bars.
One afternoon enjoy beautiful seascape travelling along the west coast
of Attica to Cape Sounion, the first place mentioned by Pausanias, a
wind swept cliff crowned with the temple of Poseidon. Watching the sunset
from Cape Sounion will be an unforgettable experience.
