  Mountainous Greece
  Karpenissi and Lake Plastira

Just enjoy Greece ...
we'll do the rest !

Karpenissi

In the heart of Continental Greece, surrounded by high fir and chestnut tree forests lies the province of Evritania. Its capital town, Karpenissi, is situated at the north-west side of Mount Velouchi (2.315 m) in a region of unspoiled natural beauty.

You can have excellent accomodation in the town or in nearby villages and enjoy active holidays at any time of the year. In the winter you can go skiing on Mount Velouchi or you can enjoy the warm embrace of the fireplace and the musical cracking of the fir-tree woods. In the summer you can do sports such as rafting and kayak in the river or climb through certain mountain paths. Or you can just relax under the refreshing shadow of an old plane-tree in the midst of a picturesque square, drink fresh spring water, taste local pure wine from the barrel in the traditional taverns and try delicious casserole and grilled dishes.

Take time to explore one of the most beautiful and lesser known regions of Greece. You will be greatly rewarded.

Lake Plastira

About seventy kilometres away from Karpenissi is Plastiras Lake, a wonderful creation of man and nature. At a height of 782 m on the mountains of Agrafa which are part of the southern Pindos range, an artificial lake was made in 1959. The idea of creating a dam where the waters of three rivers could be collected on the plateau of Agrafa was conceived by Nikolaos Plastiras, a general and politician, in 1925. His dream was realised and nowadays you can see a beautiful lake with an extension of 25 sq.km. surrounded by picturesque villages. The mountains rise around the lake with their peaks covered in snow most of the year and the fir trees are reflected in the lake creating an idyllic scenery. The hotels in the green villages offer great views to the lake and the forests. Lake Plastira is the perfect place to find tranquility and peace of mind.
