Mountainous Greece
The Greek landscape is amazing not only for its beauty but also for its
complexity and variety. The dominant element is the sea. The second major
element in Greek topography is the mountains. They cover about three quarters
of the country’s surface, forming a ribbed, interlaced network. The
heart of mountainous Greece is unquestionably the rugged Pindos mountains
in the northwest. The highest point in this region is Smolikas: 8.651 feet
(2.637 m) high. The mountain scenery, with jagged granitic peaks, wild gorges
and a succession of magnificent views glimpsed from winding roads is heartbreakingly
beautiful.
Take time to explore the most beautiful villages of Greece, in the wooded
slopes of the mountains, built in harmony with their natural setting, and
get to know the Greece that lives and breathes far from the big cities and
busy roads. The traditional inns will offer you friendly hospitality in
peaceful environment and you will experience a different kind of holiday.
All the places we suggest are popular winter resorts, but they can be visited
at any time of the year. They are especially beautiful in early spring and
late autumn, as they have rich flora and fauna.
