Alexander The Great

Alexander the Great, son of Philip II of Macedonia and his wife Olympias, was born at Pella in 356 B.C. Macedonia occuping the bigger part of northern Greece, is a region of high mountains, large rivers, lakes and fertile plains. It first appears on the historical scene as a geographical-political unit in the 5th century B.C. But it was Philip the father of Alexander the Great who transformed Macedonia fron an insignificant country into the most important power in the Aegean and paved the way for the expedition of his son to the Orient.

In his early 20’s, two years after ascending the throne following the assassination of his father, Alexander set out to conquer the world. He led his grand army across the Hellespont and in the short period of eleven years he created a vast empire which extended to India. The prosperous cities founded in his name as far as the ends of the known world became centres of the preservation and dissemination of Greek spirit and culture.

Pella
Visit Pella, the birthplace of Alexander the Great, the capital of the Macedonian kingdom founded by Archelaos in 400 BC. known as the greatest of the cities in Macedonia. Philip II, the father of Alexander, was born in Pella and under his reign it was adorned with a large palace.

Vergina
Visit Vergina, the ancient city of Aigai, the first capital of Macedonia amd burial place of Macedonian kings. The brilliant tomb of king Philip II and the royal palace constitute some of the most imposing monuments discovered in Macedonia.

Dion
Visit Dion, the holy city of the Macedonians, a sanctuary of Zeus, where the Macedonian kings celebrated their military victories and dedicated votive offerings, located between the coast and the peaks of Mount Olympos where Zeus had his palace along with the other gods.
